Hoopie mugs were made and sold at the factory in Newell, West Virginia. This usually coincided with a tent sale.
One side features a man inside a barrel representing a Hoopie. The hoops for the barrels to ship pottery were made downriver in West Virginia and Ohio. The area became known as Hoopie, and the people were called Hoopies.
As a side note, my mom's family was from Parkersburg, WV, roughly three hours south of Newell. When we would go visit them, I my mom would say, "We're going to Hoopie!"
The opposite side has the date along with Newell Clay Festival.
