The name "Jean" comes from Joanne Jasper's book, The Collector's Encyclopedia of Homer Laughlin China. However, when it was originally listed in the pound sterling decorated ware books, it was called Rose and Heatherbloom. It was given various names over the years depending on who was selling it. In the 1950s, it was sold as French Rose by McClurg's. Towards the end of its run, the factory gave it the name Apple Blossom.

Other potteries used the Jean decals, namely the Taylor, Smith & Taylor Company and the Crooksville China Company.

The decal was used by Homer Laughlin from 1912 until the late 1960s making it one of the longest running patterns in the company's history.
