1918 Rhododendron
The Rhododendron was originally published in a series of booklets throughout the year. Less than an annual, but more than a school newspaper, this particular edition is from May 1918, Vol. II, No. 5 and is the last issue for the year. It features the classes at Newell along with short stories, jokes and advertisements. Athletics, Organizations/Clubs, and Activities would have been covered in previous editions.

The graduating class of 1918 consisted of: Florence Bennett, Frank LaNeve, Mae Sine, and Margie Thompson. According to the Alumni section of the 1928 Rhododendron, Bennett went on to become a stenographer in Detroit, Michigan, LaNeve a grocer, Sine moved to Salem, Ohio and married Herbert Wright, and Thompson attended Trevecca College and came back to Newell as a teacher. (Although there were only four seniors, it wasn't the smallest class to graduate from Newell. That honor belongs to the two members of the class of 1917; John Geer and Edgar Mosser.)

All the grades featured in this book were taught in the Fourth Street School which was built in 1912. Wells High was built in 1927 and a year later it began housing grades 8 through 12.
